FAQ - Nerikomi Pottery?

Q1. What is nerikomi pottery?

Nerikomi is a ceramic technique in which differently colored clays are layered and combined to create patterns.

The patterns are not painted on the surface. Because the color runs through the clay itself, the design appears on both the front and back of the piece.
It is often compared to kintaro candy or a thick sushi roll, where a pattern appears when the clay is sliced.

Q2. Are all patterns the same?

No. Every piece is one of a kind.

The patterns appear when a three-dimensional block of layered clay is sliced, so even when the same process is used, no two results are exactly alike.
Think of them as siblings—similar, but each with its own personality.

Q3. Will the pattern be different from the photos?

Yes, there may be some differences.

The photos show representative samples, but variations in lighting, firing conditions, and the natural characteristics of clay result in differences in color and expression.
You may receive a piece that is not exactly the same as the one shown in the photos.

As mentioned above, the balance and scale of the pattern vary from piece to piece.
I hope you will enjoy these variations as part of the unique charm of nerikomi pottery.

Q4. Can I use these pieces as tableware?

Yes, they are intended for everyday use.

All pieces are fired at high temperatures, and the glazes used meet food safety standards.
However, for pieces with very thin or matte glazes (described as having a “rough” or “textured” surface), prolonged contact with water may cause the base to feel damp.

Q5. Can I use a microwave, dishwasher, or oven?

Microwave:
Yes, if the piece is completely dry when food is placed inside.
Please avoid using it while the pottery is wet, as moisture absorbed in the clay may expand due to rapid temperature changes and cause cracking.

Dishwasher:
Handmade pottery is generally softer than mass-produced ceramics.
Strong vibrations and water pressure in dishwashers may cause damage, so hand washing is recommended.

Oven / Direct heat:
Only pieces specifically labeled as “oven safe” may be used.
These are made from clay suitable for earthenware cooking pots.
Use only when the piece is fully dry before placing food inside.

Q6. Is the pottery fragile?

The pieces are not especially fragile, but handmade ceramics are generally softer than industrial products.
Please handle with care and avoid strong impacts.

Rims and corners are particularly delicate.

Q7. Will the colors fade or change over time?

No.
The nerikomi patterns are created from the natural color of the clay itself, so the colors will not fade.

Q8. Can these be given as gifts?

Yes.
Each piece is truly one of a kind, making it a meaningful and unique gift.

However, due to the variety of sizes, gift boxes and gift wrapping are not available.
Despite this, many customers choose these pieces as gifts.

Q9. Do you accept returns or exchanges?

Due to the nature of handmade work, returns or exchanges for customer preference are generally not accepted.

If your item arrives damaged or significantly different from your expectations, please contact me within 7 days of delivery.

Q10. Do you have any tips for choosing a piece?

I recommend choosing the piece that simply feels right to you.

These works are not perfectly symmetrical or uniform.
If you enjoy natural variation, subtle imbalance, and the beauty of chance, you may find a piece you truly love.

Q11. Do you accept custom orders?

I’m sorry, but custom orders are not available at this time, as I cannot guarantee a delivery schedule.

Q12. When is the next workshop?

Please feel free to contact me for details.
Workshops can be arranged upon request.

My studio base is currently in Akita Prefecture, but I may be able to travel to nearby areas depending on availability.
