I began working with ceramics around 2013 at a pottery studio in Nagoya, Japan.
Due to frequent relocations, I sought a ceramic practice that could be sustained with minimal tools and materials, independent of place. This led me to nerikomi, a technique in which patterns are created by layering and slicing colored clay.
Since discovering nerikomi, I have focused almost exclusively on this method. The process allows patterns to emerge organically from within the clay itself, producing results that are never entirely predictable.
By constructing patterns three-dimensionally and revealing them through slicing, nerikomi offers a distinctly material-driven approach, different from surface decoration or painting. The resulting forms retain subtle irregularities and soft movement, qualities inherent to the nature of clay.
Through my work, I aim to share the quiet richness and tactile pleasure found in these naturally occurring patterns.
